2016 IIT Keating Hall Nano Grid Project Ribbon Cutting
Illinois Tech's Robert W. Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation unveiled the Keating Sports Center's new Nanogrid system. The system features new LED lighting powered off solar panels and battery at Illinois Tech's first hybrid AC-DC nanogrid.

2016 IEEE Region 4 Workshop on Smart Grid and Microgrid Technologies
This workshop considered microgrid solutions within the framework of Smart Grid. Several panel sessions explored Smart Grid solutions for bringing distributed system technologies and solutions together. The focus was on applications of the DOE-sponsored Distributed Energy Resources Customer Adoption Model (DER-CAM) software, a tool for the optimization of microgrid assets. The workshop program concluded with a tour of the IIT Microgrid, one of the most successful deployments of microgrid and distributed energy resources in the U.S.

2016 DOE Microgrid and Resilient Electric Distribution Grid R&D Peer Review at IIT
You are invited to register for and attend the biennial Peer Review meeting conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Microgrid Program and Resilient Electric Distribution R&D Program. This Peer Review meeting serves as the forum for researchers, developers, implementers, and users of smart grid technologies to learn the latest advances in DOE-supported projects. The event is open to the public; all participants except Peer Reviewers are required to register.

2014 Great Lakes Symposium on Smart Grid and the New Energy Economy at IIT
The Robert W. Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation hosted the fourth annual Great Lakes Symposium on Smart Grid and the New Energy Economy, September 22-25, 2014 on the Illinois Institute of Technology's campus in Chicago. The Symposium features keynote and plenary sessions, technical presentations, and tutorials by international experts on smart grid applications. The Symposium was a one-of-a-kind event that breaks new ground in smart grid design and development and showcases smart grid best practices from around the country along with new technologies and ideas that are spurring innovation, growing state economies, reducing emissions and empowering consumers to conserve and save. Participants had the opportunity to engage thought leaders on key policy questions, identify investment and job creation opportunities, and learn about projects already underway.

NASCAR driver Leilani Munter in her Tesla at IIT Chicago
Leilani Munter, a NASCAR driver committed to carbon-free sustainability (http://carbonfreegirl.com/) is embarking on a zero-carbon Tesla tour that will end in Chicago on July 16 before her race at Chicagoland Speedway that weekend. Leilani is making a commitment to travel to all of her races using zero gas/oil, including zero jet fuel. To kick off this commitment, she will be traveling from Charlotte, NC to Chicago in her Tesla Model S, stopping at Tesla Supercharger stations along the route. She will be promoting the use of Electric Vehicles throughout her trip.
As a finale to her trip, the Galvin Center and WISER at Illinois Institute of Technology will host a small welcome event at 12 noon on July 16th at the Smart Electric Vehicle Charging Station at IIT (3201 South State Street, Chicago, IL 60616). You are all invited to attend the event at IIT, meet local EV interest groups and other supporters, and have a photo opportunity with Leilani reaching her destination.

Chicagoland Wind Council 20th Meeting
The objective of the Chicagoland Wind Council (CWC) is to help companies develop a strategic plan for
finding new customers or develop products in the wind turbine market.
The first project for the CWC was to help each participating company develop a Strategic Plan that would guide
the company's actions as it enters or expands its customers in the wind supply chain. The Plan would
contribute to each company efforts to attend or exhibit in some form at the 2010 AWEA show in Dallas.

Media Event : One World Trade Center is 'tallest building in US'
The Height Committee of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat announced its decision in Chicago. The committee of architects has declared New York City's newly erected One World Trade Center the tallest building in the US, at 1,776ft (541m). The previous title holder was that city's tallest building, the Willis Tower, at 1,451ft (442m). The committee ruled a 408ft needle at the top counted toward its height.

Illinois Smart Grid Policy Forum: Measuring Progress and Charting Directions

2013 Electrical Energy Storage Technologies and Applications Workshop
Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy awarded $120 million to establish a Joint Center for Energy Storage Research at Argonne. The Joint Center will bring together multidisciplinary researchers from the government, academia, and industry to overcome critical scientific and technical barriers and create new breakthrough energy storage technology. The Workshop which is sponsored by the Robert W. Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation at Illinois Institute of Technology will provide a timely introduction to these exciting market developments.

In 2012, Galvin Center sponsored the third IEEE PES Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT) in Washington D.C. The conference attracted thousands of attendees from throughout the world and served as a premier forum for discussion of state-of-the-art innovations in smart grid technologies.

2011 Great Lakes Symposium on Smart Grid and the New Energy Economy at IIT
In 2011 the Galvin Center held the first annual Great Lakes Symposium on Smart Grid and the New Energy Economy. This one-of-a-kind event broke new ground in Smart Grid design and development, attracting more than 400 attendees to IIT's campus for the two-day conference.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability held the Microgrid Workshop on July 30-31, 2012, at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) facilities in Chicago, Illinois.
2011 Workshop on Wind Energy Research at IIT
Illinois Institute of Technology was awarded an $8M grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to establish a University-Industry Consortium for Wind Energy Research, Education, and Workforce Development. On July 20, 2011, IIT's Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation hosted the second meeting of the Consortium members on IIT's main campus in Chicago. This meeting concluded with a reception and ribbon-cutting of the IIT's 1.5 MW GE Wind Turbine and the two 8kW Wind Turbines at IIT.

2012 Charging Station Ribbon Cutting at IIT
On March 19, 2012, the Galvin Center opened its smart electric vehicle charging station at IIT. The setup includes nine electric vehicle charging stations, including one DC Quick Chargers, which can charge an electric vehicle in approximately 15 minutes, and six Level 2 stations that can charge an electric vehicle in five to six hours. There are two additional chargers for electric vehicles belong to the I-GO car sharing program. The charging station is adjacent to a 25kW solar canopy which provided the daily charges to electric vehicles without overloading the campus distribution grid. The chargers are free and open to the public, providing a convenient charge for electric vehicle drivers on nearby Lake Shore Drive and the Dan Ryan Expressway. The electric vehicle charging station is connected to IIT Microgrid which coordinates the electric vehicle charging with on-campus battery usage and building load management to minimize the impact of daytime electric vehicle charging on the IIT campus load. The new charging stations were donated by Eaton Corporation to IIT for demonstration on the IIT Microgrid, with the additional funding from the U.S. Department of Energy.

The Galvin Center had two ribbon cutting events in July 2011 for its 8-kW wind unit located at the IIT Microgrid, and its 1.5MW wind unit located at the Grand Ridge wind farm outside Chicago, Illinois.

Advancing Wind Power in Illinois (Fifth Annual Conference) in 2011
This conference covered many aspects of wind energy including small wind, community wind and large wind farms. The two-day event was co-hosted by the Center for Renewable Energy at Illinois State University and the Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and included plenary sessions, breakout seminars, breakout panel sessions, and exhibitors.
