SPIKE initiative is a joint effort of the IIT’s Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation and Stuart School of Business. We believe energy is an essential component of a modern society, not only in terms of economic development but also for the survival of individual human beings across the globe. Our vision is aligned with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in which “Energy is the golden thread that connects economic growth, increased social equity and an environment that allows the world to thrive.”
According to UN Millennium development goals report 2015, over 1.4 billion people live in the dark! It is they have no access to basic supply of electricity for cooking, lighting, and heating. In fact in many remote areas of the world, lives are often lost due to the absence of basic refrigeration that is so vital to preserving life-saving medications. Every year, 4.3 million people die due to diseases triggered by indoor smoke from cooking, heating, oil lamps and candles. Every day, women and babies lives are lost as hospitals don’t have access to power even for light during childbirth, let alone basic electrical equipment.
We believe where there are challenges there are also opportunities!
SPIKE initiative brings the promise of modern electricity to some of the world’s 1.4 billion residents who have none; leading by example in accelerating access to reliable, affordable, and clean electricity supplies. SPIKE’s key technology innovation is the Affordable Microgrid (AM) program. SPIKE initiative will leverage the IIT’s strength in renewable energy and smart grid technology research, development, demonstration, and deployment.
In rural areas, decentralized clean energy solutions such as Microgrids tied to renewable sources of energy can provide refrigeration, light the way, give hospitals the means to do their job effectively, saving lives and promoting health, and particularly empowering women economically and socially.
Addressing electricity needs in impoverished communities can change lives! Provide an equal opportunity for these nations to compete, create economic opportunity, enhance their prosperity, and protect the environment.
